Lecturers at higher education institutions, unlike teachers in primary and secondary education, are rarely required to be formally trained as educators. Doctoral graduates are typically expected to be able to teach after having been exposed to teaching (though possibly only on the receiving end) during the early stages of their academic careers. Teaching and learning centres sometimes exist at larger institutions but are generally underfunded. As a result, the modernisation of teaching and learning methods is a very slow process, undermining the potential of new substance to be incorporated into higher education with appropriate pedagogical methods.
The Teaching-Coaching programme provides webinars and all the supporting materials to contribute to capacity building for instructors in higher education institutions in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia and to train regional DRM and hazard mapping lecturers in modern pedagogical methods with up-to-date substantive knowledge, and improve effectiveness of teaching and learning centres at South Caucasus higher education institutions.
