The distance learning module aims to provide participants with an overview of the concepts, tools, and practical skills needed to undertake hazard assessments in the context of disaster risk management.
The module consists of two parts:
Part 1: Core concepts, definitions, challenges and tools in hazard assessment and DRM in a national and international contexts (approximately 30 hours of time investment).
A series of Powerpoint lectures can be followed by participants at their own pace. Each lecture is supported with videos and selected readings to broaden the participants’ learning experiences.
Part 2: Practical exercises that put theory into practice to produce hazard and risk maps (25 – 30 hours of time investment).
Participants conduct a series of five practical exercises to familiarise themselves with GIS and hydrological modelling, as a basis for hazard and risk mapping. The module concludes with a short independent project, where the participants are able to demonstrate their overall understanding of the concepts and practical skills they have gained.
