The objective of the independent project work is to put into practice the theory, concepts and skills you have learnt through Part 1 and 2 of the distance learning module. The aim is to demonstrate your understanding of the overall approach to hazard and risk assessment, however, generating operational hazard maps is not within the scope of this project.

To recap, on a theoretical and conceptual level, you have been introduced to the concept of DRM, and the central role that hazard mapping and risk assessment play. You have learnt that climate change is a main driver of disaster risk, and that many types of disasters, particularly related to extreme temperature and rainfall, are expected to increase in the future.

You have been introduced to scenario-based hazard mapping, where hazard levels for various flood or mass movement threats are classified on the basis of their expected probability and intensity.

On a practical level, you have been introduced to hydrological modelling for hazard mapping, and the various ways in which GIS can be used to analyse hazards, and you have become familiar with the functionality of ArcGIS.
